Electricity Minister Visits Medupi and Matimba Power Stations to Assess Generation Recovery Plan

Electricity and Energy Minister Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa yesterday visited the Medupi and Matimba power stations in Lephalale as part of ongoing oversight of Eskom’s Generation Recovery Plan. The plan aims to improve the reliability and performance of power plants to end load shedding and ensure a stable electricity supply.

The visit also marked the return of Medupi’s Unit 4, which had been offline since an explosion in August 2021. After extensive repairs—completed ahead of the initial 2026 deadline—the unit is now contributing 800 megawatts (MW) to the national grid. This additional capacity is seen as a key factor in the recent suspension of rolling blackouts.

Minister’s Inspection and Media Briefing

The minister was expected to receive a detailed briefing from power station management. Key discussion points included:

  • The operational status of Medupi’s six units, including Unit 4.

  • Maintenance progress and long-term sustainability measures.

  • The performance of the nearby Matimba Power Station, which has remained operational.

Following the closed-door meeting, the minister and media were scheduled for a facility tour to observe power generation processes firsthand. A press conference was expected later in the day, where Dr. Ramokgopa would provide updates on Eskom’s broader recovery strategy.

Community Impact and Future Steps

While South Africa has experienced reduced load shedding in recent months, residents in Lephalale and surrounding areas, such as Marapong, have historically faced frequent outages.

The minister’s visit underscores government efforts to stabilize the power sector, with Medupi’s restored capacity being a critical milestone. However, challenges remain in maintaining consistent performance across Eskom’s fleet.
