Eastern Cape Teachers Demand Police Protection After Gang Extortion Threat

Teachers at a school in Ngqeleni are living in fear after receiving a chilling extortion note from a gang demanding a monthly “protection fee” of R1,000 per person—or face violent consequences.

The anonymous letter, addressed to educators residing on school premises, warns that failure to pay by August 20 will result in harsh retaliation, citing a previous break-in at the school as a “warning.” The gang claims the area as their “territory” and threatens teachers’ lives, vehicles, and families, stating that even reporting the matter to police would be futile.

“We Are Scared” – Teachers Plead for Help

One teacher, who spoke anonymously due to safety concerns, confirmed the authenticity of the threat, revealing that 15 staff members—including some with children—live on-site and could collectively lose R15,000 monthly to the gang.

“We are preparing Grade 12 trial exams, but our focus is shattered because we fear for our lives,” the teacher said. “We need visible policing now—before the 20th—or we may have to abandon the school.”

Police Action and Provincial Response

The Eastern Cape Education Department has condemned the threats and filed a formal complaint with the South African Police Service (SAPS). Authorities confirmed an investigation is underway, though no arrests have been made.

This incident follows a broader pattern of extortion in the region, with gangs increasingly targeting schools and businesses. In a related development, an alleged extortionist was shot dead in a police confrontation yesterday, though it remains unclear if the suspect was linked to the school case.

Exam Disruptions Loom

With trial exams set to begin on August 25, educators warn that the climate of fear could disrupt critical preparations. Some teachers are considering relocating, while learners may stay home for safety.

“We can’t teach under gunpoint,” the teacher emphasized. “If SAPS doesn’t act, this gang will control our school—and our futures.”
