Major Bus Crash on M1 North Causes Chaos, Multiple Injuries Reported

A severe multi-vehicle collision involving a commuter bus and six other cars shut down the M1 North at Booysens Road yesterday morning, causing extensive traffic delays and leaving multiple people injured.

According to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), the accident occurred after an altercation between a passenger and the bus driver led to the passenger grabbing the steering wheel, causing the bus to lose control. The bus, traveling on the M1 South, veered across the median barrier and collided with vehicles on the M1 North.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that while there were no fatalities, several individuals sustained serious injuries. Emergency services responded swiftly, and the scene was later cleared, with the roadway reopening after hours of delays.

“Preliminary reports indicate reckless behavior contributed to the crash,” said Fihla. “A case of reckless and negligent driving will be opened, and further charges may follow as investigations continue.”

The incident caused significant disruptions during peak morning traffic, affecting routes around Booysens and Crown areas. Authorities have urged motorists to remain cautious and report any reckless driving.

Investigations are ongoing, and updates will be provided as more details emerge.
