Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has reiterated that his party is willing to negotiate joining the Government of National Unity (GNU)—but only if the Democratic Alliance (DA) leaves. Malema made the remarks during his court appearance at the East London Regional Court on Tuesday.
“We cannot be part of the GNU while the DA is still in it,” Malema stated, reinforcing the EFF’s stance on refusing to cooperate with the DA in a coalition government. His comments come amid ongoing political negotiations following the recent elections.
Malema Condemns Zuma’s Morocco Visit
Malema also took aim at former president Jacob Zuma and his uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party over Zuma’s controversial visit to Morocco. The EFF leader accused Zuma of abandoning the party’s stated position on Western Sahara, a territory occupied by Morocco but claimed by the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
“On Morocco, that was a complete sellout position,” Malema said. “Now there is maneuvering—they are no longer emphasizing their party position on Morocco. They are saying a former head of state can visit any country and interact with those people. No one is questioning that. We are questioning his position and that of his party in relation to Morocco.”
Malema reaffirmed the EFF’s solidarity with the people of Western Sahara, stating, “We are very clear. We are for the people of Western Sahara, and we must make sure that they too realize their freedom in their lifetime.”
Political Ramifications
The EFF’s conditions for GNU participation could further complicate coalition dynamics, as the DA remains a key player in the current unity government. Meanwhile, Malema’s criticism of Zuma highlights growing tensions between the EFF and the MK Party, particularly on foreign policy issues.
