More than 200 FlySafair pilots have begun a two-week strike today after wage negotiations between the airline and trade union Solidarity reached a deadlock.
The union issued a strike notice following failed discussions over salary increases. Solidarity has rejected FlySafair’s offer of a 5.7% raise, demanding instead a 10.5% increase for the next financial year.
In anticipation of the industrial action, FlySafair has already adjusted its flight schedule for July 22 to 28 as a precautionary measure. The airline has not yet commented on whether further cancellations or delays are expected if the strike continues beyond the initial week.
Passengers are advised to check their flight status and contact the airline for updates. The strike could cause significant disruptions for travelers, particularly on domestic routes where FlySafair operates extensively.
Solidarity maintains that the strike is a last resort after negotiations broke down, while FlySafair has yet to release a formal response to the union’s demands. The dispute highlights growing tensions in South Africa’s aviation sector as workers push for higher wages amid rising living costs.
