The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called an urgent meeting of its Federal Executive following the abrupt dismissal of Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Andrew Whitfield by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The Presidency confirmed the decision in a brief statement, citing Section 93(1) of the Constitution, which grants the president authority to appoint and remove deputy ministers. While Ramaphosa thanked Whitfield for his service, no specific reason was provided for his removal.
Speculation Over Motives
Political analyst Sandile Swana suggested that Whitfield’s dismissal may be linked to tensions over economic transformation policies, particularly Black Economic Empowerment (BEE). Swana claimed the DA, which fought hard for the Trade and Industry portfolio in Government of National Unity (GNU) negotiations, has been pushing to dismantle BEE—a move at odds with the ANC’s stance.
No Cabinet Reshuffle Expected
Despite speculation, the Presidency clarified that Ramaphosa has “no intention to make wholesale changes to his cabinet.” However, the DA’s emergency meeting suggests internal party concerns over the implications of Whitfield’s axing.
Ramaphosa Defends Transformation Policies
The dismissal comes a day after Ramaphosa staunchly defended BEE and economic transformation during a parliamentary Q&A session. Swana argued that while the GNU remains stable, Whitfield’s removal highlights underlying tensions between the DA’s pro-business agenda and the ANC’s commitment to redress policies.
“The GNU is fit for purpose—it was designed to serve big business, and it is doing exactly that,” Swana said.
