The Africa Energy Forum (AEF) has drawn thousands of energy leaders, financiers, and young innovators to the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) for its second day, with discussions centered on strengthening Africa’s role in global energy debates.

A major highlight was the signing of a $52 million solar energy deal between Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Energy and the UK-funded Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG), signaling growing international investment in Africa’s renewable energy sector.
Tandi, a UK Trade and Investment Advisor, emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing Africa’s energy transition. “We see the UK as a collaborator, not just a partner, in establishing and growing Africa’s energy sector,” she said, highlighting ongoing discussions on blended finance models to attract institutional capital.
Women and Youth in Energy
A strong focus was placed on empowering women in STEM and leadership roles. “Women are most affected by climate change, so they must lead in shaping solutions,” Tandi noted, pointing to UK-backed initiatives supporting girls’ education in STEM and women’s leadership in energy and finance.
Meanwhile, young innovators are playing a crucial role in the forum, with dedicated spaces for youth-led discussions on sustainable energy solutions. “Over 70% of Africa’s population is young—they must shape their energy future,” Tandi added.
Africa’s Renewable Energy Potential
With abundant sunshine and vast renewable resources, Africa is well-positioned to lead in sustainable energy. “We have sunshine 365 days a year—why not harness it?” Tandi remarked, urging strategic partnerships to accelerate solar and other green energy projects.
