South Africa Celebrates Continental Brand Excellence at Landmark Johannesburg Event

South Africa took center stage in brand excellence as Johannesburg hosted a prestigious event celebrating Africa’s most admired and influential business brands. The highly anticipated 2025 Brand Africa 100 | South Africa’s Best Brands rankings were unveiled at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in Sandton, in a ceremony co-hosted by Brand Africa, Brand South Africa, the JSE, and Business Day.

The event, attended by industry leaders, policymakers, and media, highlighted the growing influence of African brands both on the continent and globally. Among the key themes discussed were economic growth, inclusivity, and the role of brands in shaping Africa’s global image.

A Night of Recognition and Pride

An SABC News reported from the JSE, described the atmosphere as “electrifying,” with a strong sense of pride as attendees awaited the announcement of the top 100 brands. The SABC itself was nominated in the Best Media category, marking a historic moment as the public broadcaster celebrates 75 years of service.

Neville Matjie, CEO of Brand South Africa, emphasized the importance of branding in driving economic progress. “Brand is currency. Brand is weight. It resonates through time if nurtured properly,” he said, citing global South African success stories like MTN, Nando’s, and Bell Equipment—which has expanded into the U.S. and Europe.

Africa’s Economic Potential and Global Positioning

The discussions also touched on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), with Matjie stressing the need for intra-African trade to boost economic growth and job creation. “South Africa markets itself as part of Africa first,” he said, aligning with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s vision for the continent’s economic integration.

With South Africa set to host the G20 summit, Matjie highlighted the country’s role in positioning Africa as a key player in global business“This is not just a G20 for South Africa—it’s a G20 for Africa,” he stated, noting the continent’s readiness to compete on the world stage.

Sustainability and Global Competitiveness

Drawing parallels with Dubai’s economic diversification, Matjie underscored the importance of innovation and sustainability in maintaining South Africa’s global appeal. He pointed to recent international endorsements following high-profile diplomatic engagements as proof of the country’s growing reputation.

Looking Ahead

As the ceremony kicked off, industry leaders, including Dr. Terry Khumalo (Brand Africa Chairperson), Puleng Mabe (JSE CEO), and SABC Group CEO Nomsa Chabeli, shared insights on brand leadership and Africa’s future in the global economy.

The Brand Africa 100 rankings not only celebrate corporate success but also reinforce the continent’s potential as a hub of innovation and competitiveness. With brands like MTN, Nando’s, and emerging giants leading the charge, South Africa continues to solidify its role as a key driver of Africa’s economic narrative.
