Two Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Intervention Unit officers were fatally shot by armed suspects in Tembisa on Thursday night, in what authorities have condemned as a brazen and ruthless attack.
The incident occurred at approximately 21:29 in the Umthambeka Section, Extension 11, while the officers were reporting for night shift duty. According to preliminary reports, the victims—both members of the EMPD’s Specialized Services Unit—were en route to pick up a colleague when they were ambushed by unknown assailants.
It is alleged that while waiting outside a residence, the officers were confronted by the armed suspects, who opened fire without warning. Both officers sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The perpetrators then stole the officers’ service pistols before fleeing on foot to a waiting getaway vehicle, which remains unidentified.
The EMPD has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the killings, describing the attack as a “great loss” for the department and the City of Ekurhuleni. Law enforcement agencies have launched a manhunt for the suspects, vowing to ensure they “face the full might of the law.”
Acting Chief of Police, Mr. J.D Mkhwanazi, extended his condolences, stating: “Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and colleagues during this difficult time.”
The killings have reignited concerns over the safety of law enforcement officers, who face increasing risks in the line of duty. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
