Despite predictions of snowfall, the Setsoto Local Municipality in Ficksburg experienced only a severe hailstorm on Monday, leaving residents shivering under freezing temperatures. While snow did not blanket the region as anticipated, the municipality remains on high alert, prepared to respond to any emergencies caused by the ongoing cold spell.
Hailstorm Instead of Snow
Residents had hoped for a rare snowfall after weather forecasts warned of possible winter storms. Instead, a heavy hailstorm covered the town for nearly an hour, creating a brief illusion of snow before melting away. Mayor Seipati Mbiwe of Setsoto Municipality confirmed that while physical snow is uncommon in the area, the extreme cold persists, with temperatures dropping significantly.
Municipality on Standby for Emergencies
With the bitter cold posing risks—particularly in informal settlements where residents rely on paraffin stoves and candles—the municipality has activated contingency plans. Mayor Mbiwe emphasized the dangers of unattended heaters and open flames, which often lead to shack fires during winter.
“We are combat-ready for any weather-related emergencies,” she said, adding that road-clearing equipment is on standby in case of sudden snowfall. The municipality has also conducted public awareness campaigns to educate residents on fire safety.
Assistance for the Homeless
While Ficksburg does not have a large homeless population, local NGOs provide support, including hot meals, for those in need. The mayor noted that most homeless individuals are well-known to the community, with residents often helping by offering warm drinks and other assistance.
As the cold snap continues, authorities urge residents to stay vigilant and take precautions against the freezing conditions. With no snow in sight but temperatures remaining dangerously low, Setsoto Municipality remains prepared to assist those affected by the winter weather.
