The Free State government has activated emergency response teams as severe winter weather, including snow and hail, sweeps across the province. Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and Housing MEC Saki Mokoena has assured residents that disaster management teams are on standby to assist those affected by the extreme conditions.
Emergency Preparedness in Place
MEC Mokoena, speaking in an interview, confirmed that the province has braced for adverse weather, particularly in mountainous regions such as Maluti-a-Phofung, QwaQwa, and areas along the Lesotho border. The provincial government has deployed graders and tractors to clear snow-blocked roads, while emergency medical services (EMS) and law enforcement remain on high alert.
“We have learned from last year’s challenges in Maluti and other high-altitude areas,” Mokoena said. “Our teams are ready to intervene if roads become unsafe or communities require urgent assistance.”
Reports of Minor Damage
Thus far, the province has recorded minor incidents, including hail damage to roofs in Ficksburg and a localized road obstruction in Maluti, which has since been cleared. No fatalities or major displacements have been reported, but authorities remain cautious as temperatures continue to drop.
Appeal to Residents
Mokoena urged residents to exercise extreme caution, particularly when using heating sources in informal settlements, where fire risks are high. He also advised motorists to drive carefully amid icy and wet road conditions.
“We are appealing to the public to alert us about vulnerable individuals or emergencies,” he said. “Community radio stations, social media, and direct communication with municipalities are being used to keep residents informed.”
Long-Term Climate Challenges
The MEC acknowledged that extreme weather events, likely linked to climate change, are becoming an annual challenge for the Free State. He emphasized the need for greater investment in municipal disaster response capabilities, including fire services, road-clearing equipment, and livestock protection measures for farmers.
24-Hour Monitoring
With forecasts predicting worsening conditions overnight, disaster management teams will remain on 24-hour standby. The provincial agriculture department is also working closely with farmers to safeguard livestock, which is particularly vulnerable during harsh winter storms.
