The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has announced an investigation into a fatal aircraft crash in KwaZulu-Natal that claimed the lives of three people on Sunday evening.
According to SACAA, two separate aviation accidents occurred involving a formation of three aircraft that had departed from Durban’s Virginia Airport en route to Wonderboom Airport in Pretoria. The flight was intended to include a refueling stop at Ladysmith Airport in the Midlands. However, due to the lack of night landing facilities in Ladysmith, the aircraft were diverted to Greytown Airport.
The circumstances leading to the crash remain unclear, but authorities have confirmed that three fatalities resulted from the incident. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, though further details regarding the condition of the aircraft or possible survivors have not yet been released.
SACAA stated that a full investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the crash, including factors such as weather conditions, pilot communication, and mechanical issues.
Aviation experts have emphasized the risks associated with night flying, particularly in areas with limited airport infrastructure. The diversion to Greytown Airport raises questions about whether proper protocols were followed during the unexpected change in flight plans.
The identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed pending notification of their families.
This marks another tragic incident in South Africa’s aviation sector, prompting calls for enhanced safety measures, especially for nighttime operations at regional airports.
Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
