As Severe Cold Snap Grips South Africa, Warning System Explained

A powerful cold front has swept across the country, bringing freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall, and disruptive weather conditions. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued multiple warnings, urging residents and motorists to exercise caution as the intense system persists.

Widespread Adverse Weather Conditions

According to SAWS forecaster Edward Engelbrecht, the cold front made landfall in the Western Cape yesterday and has since spread eastward, affecting parts of the Eastern Cape and other provinces. The system is expected to intensify into a cut-off low-pressure system, bringing:

  • Heavy snowfall in high-lying areas

  • Very cold temperatures, with minimums dropping below freezing in some regions

  • Strong coastal winds

  • Disruptive rainfall

  • Severe thunderstorms in parts of KwaZulu-Natal

Engelbrecht warned that the worst conditions are expected on Monday and Tuesday, with the system likely to clear by Wednesday. However, cold temperatures will persist throughout the week, with maximums struggling to reach the mid-teens in many areas.

Provinces Affected – Except Limpopo

While most provinces will experience harsh conditions, Limpopo is expected to remain largely unaffected by the severe weather due to its northern location. “Temperatures will drop, but we don’t anticipate the same level of severe weather as in other regions,” Engelbrecht explained.

Weather Warning System Explained

SAWS has issued yellow and orange-level warnings, indicating minor to significant impacts:

  • Yellow Level 2 warnings for disruptive rain and snowfall in the Northern Cape, Free State, and Eastern Cape.

  • Orange Level 5-6 warnings for more severe impacts, particularly in the Eastern Cape.

Engelbrecht noted that such intense systems occur two to three times a year, suggesting that further snow and extreme cold may still be expected this winter.

Potential Disruptions

The snowfall could lead to:

  • Road closures and traffic disruptions

  • Challenges for livestock farmers

  • Possible power outages due to heavy winds and rain

Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts, avoid unnecessary travel, and prepare for prolonged cold conditions.

Winter Outlook

While seasonal forecasts predict average rainfall for the Western Cape, Engelbrecht cautioned that more extreme systems could still develop in the coming months.

As South Africa braces for the icy blast, authorities urge the public to take precautions—winter is here, and it’s biting hard.
