Goodyear’s Shock Exit from Kariega After 78 Years Leaves Community in Crisis

The sudden announcement that global tyre giant Goodyear is shutting down its operations in Kariega (formerly Uitenhage) has sent shockwaves through the Eastern Cape town, leaving hundreds of jobs at risk and threatening the local economy.

A Devastating Blow After 78 Years

Goodyear has been a cornerstone of Kariega’s industrial sector for 78 years, providing employment for generations. The company’s decision to withdraw has left employees, the taxi industry, and the broader community reeling.

A former Goodyear employee of 18 years who now works in the taxi industry, recounted the company’s past resilience. He recalled how Goodyear had successfully turned around struggling plants in Germany and Italy in the 1990s through worker commitment and management restructuring. However, he blamed the current crisis on poor local management.

“If they were competent, they could not fail the entire Goodyear family in Uitenhage,” he said. “The community, the taxi industry—everyone is crying about this.”

Economic Ripple Effects

The closure puts approximately 900 jobs on the line, with severe knock-on effects for Kariega’s economy. The taxi industry, heavily reliant on Goodyear workers as passengers, fears a drastic drop in revenue.

“Sax finance will start pounding the cars because we won’t be able to pay,” he warned. “If I was getting five trips a day, I’ll be getting three. Our business will no longer be viable.”

Calls for Intervention

Community leaders and stakeholders are exploring ways to engage with Goodyear and other investors in hopes of reversing the decision. Mueloro pointed to international examples where worker sacrifices—such as unpaid overtime—and management restructuring saved factories.

“In Italy, workers took ownership. They worked an extra hour for free, and management cut excess staff,” he said. “Here, we don’t invest in human capital. The guy operating the machine should also be able to fix it.”

A Sad End to an Era

Goodyear’s exit marks the end of an era for Kariega, dealing a major blow to South Africa’s struggling manufacturing sector. While the company insists the closure is unavoidable, the community remains hopeful that last-minute negotiations could provide a lifeline.

For now, Kariega braces for the economic fallout as one of its oldest employers prepares to depart.
