The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the ZF Mgcawu District has welcomed the sentencing of an 18-year-old rape accused in the Postmansburg Regional Court on Monday, 26 May 2025. The accused was found guilty of rape and sentenced to five years imprisonment.
The conviction stems from an incident that occurred on the evening of 22 October 2021, when the victim returned home from a school function and found no one at her residence. She then went to a local home in search of her brother. A friend of her brother offered her a room to sleep in for the night.
During the night, the victim was awakened by her brother and realized she was naked. Confused, she fell back asleep. The following morning, she awoke with the realization that she had been sexually assaulted. After experiencing flashbacks of the events, she confronted the accused, who admitted to having non-consensual sex with her.
The victim reported the crime to the police, leading to the registration of a rape case. Following an investigation, the accused was arrested and charged.
In delivering the verdict, the court found the accused guilty of rape and imposed a five-year prison sentence.
