Somerset West murder horror: Police launch urgent search for fatal murder by Ronelle Snyders.
A wave of shock and outrage swept through the Somerset West community following the brutal murder of a 42-year-old Lesotho foreigner, who was shot multiple times in an apparent assassination early Monday morning (7 October).
The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was shot dead in broad daylight on Lourensford Road near the intersection with Main Road during rush hour traffic at around 7:00 a.m. He was walking along the sidewalk, carrying a backpack on his way to work.
According to a police report, three gunmen opened fire on the unsuspecting man and fled on foot before jumping into a vehicle to escape.
Despite the quick response of emergency services, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
“The motive for this attack is now the subject of a police investigation,” provincial police spokesman Joseph Swartbooi said.
Shocked motorists drove past the scene in shock and many took to social media to express the horror of the incident.
Some reported that after the shooting, the suspects happened to walk to a car and appeared calm and professional.
The Somerset West Serious and Violent Crime Detectives are appealing to the public to come forward with any information that could lead to an arrest.
