Western Cape police said members were deployed to respond to incidents of looting in at least five different areas as the violence associated with the strike by taxi operators continued.

There were reports of at least two fatalities linked to the strike when a motorist reportedly opened fire on people stoning cars on the N2 in the vicinity of the Cape Town Airport.

A second person was also found this morning with several gunshot wounds.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the SA Police Service said they responded to incidents of looting at certain shopping malls in Gugulethu, Nyanga, Khayelitsha, Mfuleni, and Kraaifontein this afternoon.

“Reports suggest that protestors have violently entered shops and fled with household appliances, clothing, and liquor”

Five people were arrested in Gugulethu for the possession of suspected stolen property, while cases of public violence are under police investigation.

SAPS said more arrests could be made, while a strong SAPS presence is being maintained in the affected areas and possible hot spots.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner for Policing, Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili was in Nyanga on Monday where she led operations to deal with incidents of public violence that erupted this morning.”Our members will remain on high alert and deployed in numbers to ensure the safety of the public, and to maintain law and order,” she said.
