GAUTENG – Hlulani Baloyi (47) appeared before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court today on charges of illegal possession of rhino horns and contravening the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act (NEMBA). The case was postponed to Friday, 11 August 2023 for a formal bail application.
Members of the Benoni K9 Unit noticed a suspicious Toyota Etios during a routine patrol along the R 21 highway near Atlas Road. The members stopped and searched the vehicle which had one occupant. Upon searching, the vehicle a yellow plastic bag was spotted underneath the driver’s seat and upon enquiring, they found a rhino horn weighing 1.6 kilogram. When probed, the driver failed toexplain why he was in possession of the horn.
Baloyi was immediately arrested on the spot while the vehicle and the horn were seized by the authorities for investigative purposes. The matter was referred to the Germiston based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime for further probing. The investigation continues.
