Many people were sceptical about the nearly 1 800 km drive that Corné Els (50) wanted to tackle from Krugersdorp to Robertson on a 68-year-old Massey Ferguson tractor. Corné, however, kicked dust in the eyes of her doubts this past weekend and successfully completed the drive when she arrived at the Babylonstoren wine farm in Klapmuts on Saturday.
“I still feel overwhelmed when I think back on the past two weeks. It was a very emotional journey, but in a positive and enriching way. “It is really only by God’s grace that we were able to accomplish something like this. Apart from his hand of protection that was upon us, I received so much support from family, friends and strangers from the beginning to the end,” Corné tells Maroela Media.
It took Corné 13 days to complete the approximately 1 800 km route that winds through five provinces. She had to make adjustments along the way due to heavy rains that made some roads inaccessible.
Maroela previously reported that Corné embarked on the drive in an attempt to raise money for her 16-year-old daughter, Marconette. Marconette wants to compete in the world tug-of-war championship later this year in Switzerland. The aim is to raise R160 000, of which Corné has already raised about R100 000 on the tractor ride.
