KuGompo City’s ‘California’ Area Remains a Flashpoint for Drug Concerns Despite Police Operations

The small area known locally as “California” in KuGompo City, part of Buffalo City Metro in the Eastern Cape, has once again drawn attention following recent community protests and action against crime and drug-related activities.

Residents describe the area as a notorious hub for drug dealing, where addiction often begins and proves extremely difficult to overcome. On a recent quiet day, locals noted that the spot is usually bustling with activity linked to substance abuse. Users in the area have reported that drugs are readily available, and many admit that addiction drives them to commit crimes to sustain their habits.

Focus has also fallen on the Balgrave building (also referred to as Belgrave), situated at the entrance to the California area. Some residents allege that drugs are sold from within the building. However, the owner disputes these claims, maintaining that the problem occurs outside the premises rather than inside.

Organisations working in the community highlighted the broader social toll. One representative explained: “The sad part of it is when young women become hooked on drugs, they then end up needing that fix all the time and it makes them susceptible to prostitution… that make them susceptible to having people who are controlling them and that habit that they have. And unfortunately, there are so few rehabilitation centres that are accessible to people who don’t have the means.”

Police have confirmed that operations targeting crime in the Buffalo City Metro are ongoing. Nearly 500 operations have been conducted across the metro, with dozens specifically in KuGompo City, including the California area. From operations in the California area, about five people have been arrested, and those cases are now before the courts.

Addressing allegations that South African Police Service (SAPS) officials accept bribes or collude with drug sellers in California, police stated that such claims are untrue. They emphasised that no formal complaints have been received to date, but any such complaint would be followed up with a full investigation.

While the area currently appears quiet, residents warn that activity typically resumes once immediate attention subsides. Community calls for stronger intervention and better access to rehabilitation services continue amid ongoing concerns about drug addiction and its links to crime and exploitation in the neighbourhood.
