Police in Thohoyandou are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder following a stabbing incident in Tovhowani village on Thursday, 2 April 2026, at approximately 01:30.
According to preliminary reports, a 79-year-old man was stabbed and killed. A 52-year-old suspect was also injured and admitted to a local hospital.
The incident occurred at a local shebeen. Authorities allege that the deceased and the suspect were involved in a dispute believed to be related to a romantic affair with the owner of the premises.
Both the victim and the suspect were reportedly among a group of people drinking sorghum beer at the shebeen. Patrons inside heard noises outside. Upon investigating, they found the two men fighting, the elderly male stabbed, and the suspect injured.
Police and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were summoned. EMS certified the 79-year-old man deceased. Officers recovered a sharp object used in the crime at the scene.
The suspect was arrested at the scene. He is currently receiving medical attention at a hospital for a chest injury and is expected to face charges of murder and attempted murder.
The 52-year-old male suspect will appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court soon.
