An adult male is in custody following a high-speed chase and exchange of gunfire with law enforcement in Khayelitsha on Tuesday morning.
According to authorities, members of the Makhaza Anti-Hijacking Team were conducting patrols in the Town Two area when they identified a vehicle with four occupants acting suspiciously. Upon noticing the police presence, the driver of the vehicle attempted to flee, initiating a high-speed pursuit.
During the chase, one of the occupants allegedly fired shots at the pursuing police members. The pursuit came to an end when the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a pole. Following the crash, all four occupants fled the scene on foot.
A subsequent search of the abandoned vehicle led to the recovery of a 9mm pistol, multiple cellular telephones, and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Further investigation linked the suspects to a business robbery that had occurred earlier in Lingelethu West. The driver of the vehicle was later apprehended.
The arrested adult male is facing charges that include possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of suspected stolen property, and reckless and negligent driving. He is scheduled to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court once formal charges have been filed.
