A 31-year-old man is due to appear in court on Monday after being arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Friday night.
According to police, members were responding to a report of a shooting incident on Beethoven Street in Cafda at approximately 22:05. Upon arrival, officers were informed by a member of the public that a suspect had fled the scene.
Police conducted a patrol of the immediate area and located the suspect not far from the reported shooting. He was found in possession of a 9mm Parabellum pistol and 24 rounds of 9mm ammunition. The suspect was unable to produce a license for the firearm and was subsequently arrested.
Authorities noted that the recovered firearm exhibits significant rust, which has obscured identifying manufacturer markings. Consequently, the visible serial number cannot be relied upon for positive identification. Investigations into the ownership of the weapon are ongoing.
The firearm has been handed in as an exhibit and will undergo ballistic testing to determine if it has been used in the commission of any other crimes.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ court on Monday, 02 March 2026, facing a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
