A 51-year-old man is scheduled to appear before the Evander Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 02 March 2026, facing charges of theft as well as the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The suspect was apprehended during a tracing operation conducted by members of the Detective Services in Evander. Authorities state that the individual was initially being sought in connection with a theft case reported in November 2025, in which he allegedly failed to pay for fuel at a local filling station.
During the operation, police located and searched a grey Toyota GD-6 bakkie bearing Mpumalanga registration plates. While searching the vehicle, officers discovered a revolver and approximately six live rounds of ammunition concealed beneath a seat.
Further investigation revealed that the firearm is registered to the suspect’s father, who resides in the Northern Cape Province. Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing and may result in additional charges being laid against the lawful owner of the weapon.
