Man Arrested for Possession of Suspected Stolen Cellphones

A 42-year-old man was arrested on Saturday, 28 February 2026, after police patrols discovered a number of cellphones in his possession that he could not account for.

The incident occurred while members of the Frances Baard District Illicit Mining Task Team were patrolling on Old De Beers Road and conducting stop-and-search operations. Officials observed a man acting suspiciously while crossing the road and carrying items in his pockets.

Police stopped and approached the individual, requesting to conduct a search. During the search, officers found several different types of cellphones wrapped in black plastic, as well as an undisclosed amount of cash. A subsequent investigation at the suspect’s residence led to the discovery of additional cellphones.

The suspect, who was unable to provide a satisfactory account for the devices, was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property. He is currently in detention and is expected to appear in court soon. Police have stated that operations to prevent illicit mining and related crimes will continue unabated in the district.
