Two Mozambicans Arrested in R3 Million Illicit Gold Bust

Police have arrested two undocumented Mozambican nationals for the illegal possession of processed gold valued at approximately R3 million following an intelligence-driven operation in the Pilgrim’s Rest policing area.

The arrests were made during an operation conducted by the Tactical Response Team (TRT) as part of #OperationShanela. The operation took place between 22h45 on 25 February 2026 and 07h00 on 26 February 2026 in the Ehlanzeni District.

According to police reports, members acted on intelligence regarding foreign nationals allegedly involved in criminal activities in the Pilgrim’s Rest area. Upon arrival at the scene, officers conducted a search which led to the discovery of six bags containing what authorities have described as approximately 90% processed gold. The precious metal was confiscated by police.

Two suspects, both aged 25 and identified as Mozambican nationals, were taken into custody. They face charges of illegal possession of precious metals, as well as contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa, as they were found to be undocumented.

Detectives are currently working with officials from the Department of Home Affairs to verify the immigration status of the two individuals.

The suspects appeared in the Graskop Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 27 February 2026. They remain in custody and are expected to make their next appearance at the Pilgrim’s Rest Periodical Court on 4 March 2026.
