Man Arrested for Unlicensed Firearm Following Gang Intelligence Operation

A 36-year-old man was arrested on Thursday evening after police discovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in his possession during an intelligence-driven patrol in Wesbank.

According to police, members deployed in the Mfuleni policing precinct were conducting patrols in Wesbank as part of a self-initiated operation. The operation followed up on intelligence gathered from a previous investigation targeting the leader of a local gang grouping in the area.

At approximately 20:20 on 26 February 2026, officers proceeded to a premises on Halfway Street in Wesbank. Upon searching the location and the occupant, they recovered a firearm along with five rounds of ammunition.

The suspect was subsequently arrested and detained at Mfuleni SAPS. He is expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on charges related to the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition once formally charged.
