Ayanda Dayi, a 42-year-old parolee and convicted serial murder accused, was sentenced to four terms of life imprisonment by the Wynberg Regional Court on Tuesday for the murders of four men in separate incidents.
In addition to the life sentences for murder, Dayi received a 15-year sentence for robbery with aggravating circumstances. He was also handed three separate 15-year terms for the illegal possession of firearms, four years for the illegal possession of ammunition, and a decade behind bars for attempted murder. The court further declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm.
The sentencing follows an investigation led by Detective Lieutenant Colonel Adrian Pretorius and Detective Warrant Officer Bradley Davids.
One of the incidents that drew significant public attention occurred on 16 May 2024 and was captured in a social media video clip. The footage showed three Sasko Bread employees traveling in a truck to deliver bread to a spaza shop in Delft along Symphony Way. In the video, Dayi and his co-accused are seen shooting at the victims, even as the victims appeared to be surrendering.
Earlier that same year, Dayi committed a double murder in Dunoon, where he shot and killed two men before hijacking their vehicle.
Court records show that Dayi has a prior criminal history, having been convicted of rape and sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment in August 2002. He was on parole at the time he committed the four murder offences.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General (Adv) Thembisile Patekile commended the investigating and prosecution teams for their work in securing the conviction.
