Police have launched a manhunt following a brazen cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery that occurred on Monday afternoon in the Old Geelhout Park area.
According to a statement by the authorities, the incident took place at approximately 16:40 on 16 February 2026. It is alleged that security personnel were traveling in a CIT vehicle along Kremetart Street when a Toyota Fortuner traveling in the opposite direction deliberately collided with the driver’s side door of the cash truck.
The impact forced the armored vehicle to stop. It was then boxed in by a Toyota Hilux (Legend) double cab bakkie.
Police reports indicate that approximately 15 armed suspects then approached the vehicle. They allegedly overpowered the security officers and forced them to unlock the doors. The guards were removed from the vehicle, dragged a short distance away, and ordered to lie face down on the ground. One of the armed guards was disarmed during the ordeal.
The suspects gained entry to the cash van and stole an undisclosed amount of money.
Following the heist, the suspects allegedly set the CIT vehicle and the Toyota Fortuner used in the collision alight. Several shots were fired during the incident, though no injuries have been reported.
The suspects fled the scene immediately after the robbery. As of now, no arrests have been made, and police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
