High-Speed Chase Leads to Arrest for Illegal Firearm Possession

A high-speed pursuit by the Maitland Crime Prevention Unit on Saturday night ended with the arrest of a suspect for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The incident occurred on Saturday night in De Villiers Street, Maitland. Members of the unit were conducting routine crime prevention patrols when a white Volkswagen Golf passed them at a high speed. Officers pursued the vehicle and successfully pulled it over.

Upon stopping the vehicle, officers conducted a search of both the occupants and the vehicle. During the search, they discovered a .38 Special revolver loaded with five rounds of ammunition in the possession of one of the occupants. The individual was unable to produce a firearm licence for the weapon.

He was arrested on the spot for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. The suspect is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court once he has been formally charged.
