Double Life Sentence for Rapist Who Targeted Elderly Women in Free State

The Welkom Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit has secured two life sentences against a man convicted of raping two elderly women in separate incidents.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Apathia Modise welcomed the sentencing, which was handed down in the Odendaalsrus Regional Court on Wednesday, 11 February 2026.

Warrant Officer Jessica Saayman, the investigating officer from the Welkom FCS Unit, led the probe into the two cases. According to police reports, the first incident occurred on 25 December 2021, at approximately 22:15. The accused entered the home of a 67-year-old woman, got into her bed while she was asleep, undressed her, and raped her.

The second offence took place on 17 September 2022. The 70-year-old victim allowed the accused entry into her home, having recognized him from previous visits to her daughter. Once inside, he attacked the victim, forcibly removed her clothing, and sexually violated her.

In court, Warrant Officer Saayman and Mr Magangeni Baloyi, representing the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), presented the evidence against Jabulani Stanley Mahlanyane (41).

Magistrate Nompumelelo Gusha convicted Mahlanyane and subsequently handed down two separate life sentences. He received one life term for raping the 67-year-old woman in December 2021 and a second life term for the sexual violation of the 70-year-old woman in September 2022.
