On Thursday, 11 February 2026, members of the Pietermaritzburg Flying Squad arrested two suspects, aged 39 and 59, in connection with a robbery case and the recovery of an unlicensed firearm.
According to police reports, the incident dates back to Sunday, 1 February 2026, when a man was allegedly robbed of his firearm in the Slangspruit area by an individual known to him. The victim subsequently opened a case of robbery at the Alexandra Road Police Station.
Following an investigation, the Flying Squad received intelligence regarding the whereabouts of the primary suspect. He was traced and apprehended in the Bhobhonono area in Sweetwaters. During the arrest, police seized the victim’s licensed firearm, which was reportedly used in the robbery.
Upon questioning, the 39-year-old suspect informed police that he had given the stolen firearm to a friend for safekeeping. This information led officers to the Pietermaritzburg Central Business District, where they recovered the weapon from the second suspect, a 59-year-old man who is employed as a clerk within one of the police units.
Both individuals were taken into custody and have been charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of stolen property. They are scheduled to appear before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court on Friday, 13 February 2026.
