Man Sentenced for Sexual Assault of Minor Niece

The name of a 33-year-old man from Pofadder has been formally entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders following his conviction for sexual assault in the Regional Court in Pofadder on Wednesday, 11 February 2026.

The conviction stems from an incident that occurred on Monday, 24 June 2024. According to court proceedings, at approximately 00:30, the accused arrived at his sister’s residence seeking a place to stay for the night. His sister initially declined due to limited space and a lack of bedding, but after persistent pleas from the accused, she relented and allowed him to sleep over.

He was permitted to sleep in close proximity to his minor niece. During the night, the child woke her mother and reported that the accused had inappropriately touched her private parts.

When confronted by his sister, the accused requested to step outside, allegedly to relieve himself. Instead, he fled the scene and did not return.

A criminal case was registered and assigned to Detective Sergeant John Rowan Nortje of the Pofadder Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for investigation. The probe led to the arrest of the accused, who made several appearances in the Pofadder Regional Court.

The court subsequently found the accused guilty of sexual assault. He was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years. In addition to the suspended sentence, the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm and ordered that his name be inscribed in the National Register for Sex Offenders.
