A 49-year-old foreign national was arrested on Thursday, 12 February 2026, after members of the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit recovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at Monontsa Village in Qwaqwa.
According to police, the arrest followed a community tip-off regarding a person allegedly in possession of an unlicensed firearm in the area. Officers operationalised the information, leading them to the suspect’s residence, where a search was conducted.
During the search, police discovered a 9mm pistol, a magazine, and ammunition. The serial numbers on the firearm had been filed off. The suspect was arrested at the scene.
He is scheduled to appear before the Tseki Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 13 February 2026, on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition.
