55-year-old man has been remanded in custody following his arrest for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition linked to a dispute in Sonwabile Township.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident occurred on Sunday, 08 February 2026. Police responded to a report of a quarrel between individuals at approximately 12:25.
Initial investigations allege that during the dispute, the suspect assaulted a victim with a firearm. The firearm was reportedly discharged during the altercation before falling to the ground. The victim then retrieved the weapon and fled to a nearby residence for safety.
Upon arrival, SAPS members confiscated a 9mm Norinco firearm and ammunition. The suspect was arrested after failing to produce a valid licence for the firearm.
The accused appeared before the Nqanqarhu Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 09 February 2026. He faces formal charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and an additional charge of unlawful discharge of a firearm in a municipal area.
The court remanded him in custody. His case is scheduled to resume on Thursday, 12 February 2026.
