Three Arrested After Police Find AK-47s in Car During Patrol

The Gauteng South African Police Service (SAPS) Provincial Illegal Mining Stabilisation Team intercepted a vehicle and arrested three suspects for possession of illegal firearms and ammunition in the early hours of Sunday, 08 February 2026.

According to police, the operation took place around 00:00 during patrols in the areas surrounding the Sporong informal settlement and Bekkersdal. Officers stopped a maroon Toyota Corolla sedan.

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of three AK-47 rifles concealed in blankets within the car’s boot. One of the three occupants was also found in possession of ammunition.

All three suspects were immediately placed under arrest on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. They are expected to appear in court soon.

Police confirmed that investigations into the matter are continuing.
