A 42-year-old man was arrested within minutes of a fatal shooting at a shopping centre on Walker Drive on Sunday, 08 February 2026, following a swift collaborative effort by community members and private security.
According to police reports, the incident began at approximately 10:35 when the suspect entered a business premises at the centre carrying a black backpack. Moments later, four gunshots were heard by people inside the establishment. The suspect was seen exiting the shop, still in possession of the backpack, and fled the scene on foot.
Prompt action by community members and private security guards led to an immediate pursuit. The suspect ran towards bushes along Walker Drive but was swiftly apprehended with the assistance of those who gave chase. The South African Police Service (SAPS) was alerted and joined the operation, leading to the suspect’s arrest.
Upon arrival, SAPS members from Kabega Park discovered the victim, a 36-year-old foreign national, inside the shop with multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene. Police recovered a firearm with ammunition, as well as the black backpack carried by the suspect.
Authorities confirmed that nothing was stolen during the incident. The motive for the attack remains unknown and will form a key part of the ongoing investigation.
The suspect is currently detained on a charge of murder and is expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court during the course of this week.
