Police in the Free State town of Harrismith have opened a murder investigation after the body of an 81-year-old woman was discovered at her home in Polani Extension 2, Intabazwe, on Sunday.
The discovery was made by the deceased’s daughter at approximately 12:30 on February 8, 2026. According to police reports, the daughter had arrived to deliver food to her mother. Upon entering the house, she found the elderly woman unresponsive in her bedroom and immediately alerted the authorities.
Members of the Harrismith police attended the scene at about 13:00. The victim was identified as Emily Mphuthi. She was found lying on her bed with a cloth around her neck and visible bruising on both legs. Preliminary investigations indicated no signs of forced entry at the residence.
A case of murder has been formally registered for investigation. The motive for the killing is currently unknown. Authorities have confirmed that a post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the exact cause of death.
