On a June 2024 operation, the South African Police Service at the Lebombo Port of Entry intercepted a Mozambican minibus. A search revealed 17 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, valued at R4.25 million, concealed in 17 containers hidden in various compartments, including speakers.
The sole occupant, 39-year-old Mozambican national Jorge Salomao Chimene, was arrested. The case was transferred to the Hawks’ Nelspruit Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit. The Hawks successfully opposed bail, proving intent to smuggle the drugs from Mozambique into South Africa.
On 29 January 2026, Chimene pleaded guilty to possession of drugs in the Nelspruit High Court. He was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. Seven years of the sentence were suspended for three years on condition he is not convicted of a similar offence during that period.
