Suspect Charged in Mass Shooting

Western Cape police have arrested and charged a 19-year-old suspect in connection with the murder of nine people at a shebeen in the Marikana informal settlement, Philippi East.

The shooting occurred shortly after 00:00 on Saturday, 17 January 2026, when three gunmen opened fire inside the shack. Six people died at the scene, one died en route to a medical facility, and one died in hospital. A ninth victim, who was seriously wounded, later died in the hospital from injuries sustained in the attack. One other person was injured. Among the deceased is a woman alleged to be the shebeen owner.

The suspect was arrested on Friday in Zweletemba, Worcester, by a team of detectives, crime intelligence, and combat members. The investigation, which police believe is extortion-related, continues for the remaining suspects.

The arrested individual is scheduled to appear at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 26 January 2026, facing nine counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
