The Mopani District Illicit Mining Task Team, in a joint operation, arrested two male suspects for illegal mining activities in Homo C village, Giyani, on Tuesday, 20 January 2026.
The operation was conducted by the Police Illicit Mining Task Team, Tzaneen Tactical Response Team (TRT), and Giyani Public Order Policing units. Police acted on a tip-off regarding illegal mining in the area, which was subsequently operationalized.
During the intervention, two suspects, aged 27 and 35, were apprehended. Authorities confirmed that several other individuals managed to evade arrest. Illegal mining equipment was seized at the scene.
The arrested suspects are scheduled to appear before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court in the near future. They face charges for the contravention of the Immigration Act and for illegal mining.
