A 42-year-old South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Sergeant, stationed at the Vuwani Military Base, will appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 12 January 2026.
He faces a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The charge relates to an incident on Friday, 9 January 2026, at approximately 17:15 in Tshirenzheni village.
Police allege the suspect assaulted a 61-year-old man with a wooden pick handle. The complainant was reportedly asleep when the suspect arrived at his residence shouting. Upon investigating, the victim was allegedly struck several times on the head, sustaining serious injuries. He was treated at a local hospital.
The suspect was arrested on Sunday, 11 January 2026, and remains in custody. Police investigations continue.
