A suspect was fatally wounded following an armed confrontation with police on the R61 road between Cicira and Mthatha Airport today.
Members of the SAPS Tactical Response Team intercepted a vehicle at approximately 12:45 based on intelligence regarding unlicensed firearms.
According to police, one occupant exited the vehicle and opened fire on officers as they approached. Police returned fire, wounding the suspect.
Emergency Medical Services pronounced the suspect dead at the scene. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has been notified and is investigating.
