Police have opened an inquest docket following the discovery of human remains in a field in the Sekhukhune District on Tuesday, 06 January 2026.
The remains were found at approximately 15:00 in ploughing fields between Luckau and Sterkfontein villages, under the Hlogotlou policing area. Community members ploughing the land alerted the police.
The scene was cordoned off and an investigation commenced with relevant stakeholders. The remains were confirmed to be human. The identity of the deceased is unknown.
The cause of death is undetermined. A post-mortem will be conducted to establish it.
Police investigations are ongoing.
