Major Drug Bust in Vredendal Nets R720,000 in Dagga, Two Suspects Arrested

 In a pre-dawn operation on Wednesday, 24 December 2025, a multi-unit police team seized a significant quantity of high-grade dagga and arrested two foreign nationals.

The operation commenced at approximately 06:00 when members of the Provincial Organised Crime Investigations (Narcotics) unit from Vredendal, supported by the SAPS Vredendal Crime Prevention Unit and the Namaqualand K9 Unit, executed a search warrant at a premises on Steve Biko Street in Vredendal-North.

A police dog from the K9 unit, named Bessie, provided a crucial breakthrough by positively indicating a black travel bag concealed beneath a bed. Upon inspection, officers discovered the bag contained multiple parcels of higher-grade indoor dagga.

The total weight of the confiscated narcotics was nearly 9 kilograms. Authorities estimate its street value at approximately R720,000.

Two Tanzanian male nationals, aged 25 and 30, were arrested at the scene. They face charges of dealing in drugs as well as contravention of the Illegal Immigrants Act 13 of 2002, Section 49(1).

The suspects are scheduled to make their first appearance in the Vredendal Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 29 December 2025.
