A major manhunt is underway in Mpumalanga after six awaiting-trial suspects, including two foreign nationals, escaped from the Lydenburg Police Station’s holding cells in the early hours of yesterday morning. The suspects face serious charges including murder and rape.
The escape was discovered by officers during a routine cell inspection around 2:30 a.m. Upon investigation, they found a hole in the holding cell area and confirmed the six men had fled.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed the incident and the immediate launch of a search operation. He stated that a dedicated team of experienced detectives and other units has been assembled to recapture the fugitives.
“We are working around the clock to ensure that we put them behind bars,” said Brigadier Mdhluli. He emphasised the urgency, noting the serious nature of the charges and that two of the escapees are Mozambican nationals.
Concurrently, an internal investigation has been sanctioned by the acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS, Dr. Zeph Mkhwanazi, to determine the circumstances that led to the breach. The probe will examine security protocols, the status of the holding cells, and the conduct of officers on duty.
“We are also looking internally as to what has actually led to the escape… and if someone is found to have contributed or aided then heads will roll,” Mdhluli stated. He acknowledged the situation was “unacceptable” but urged against jumping to conclusions before the investigation is complete.
The escape appears to have occurred without triggering any immediate alarms or camera alerts, with the discovery made only during the scheduled check. Brigadier Mdhluli explained that routine checks are meant to be constant and continuous but the investigation will determine the exact timeline and any potential lapses.
Authorities are appealing to the public, particularly in the Lydenburg and Mashishing areas, for assistance. They urge anyone with information to contact the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app.
“We call on members of the public… Let them share that information. They must not allow this before they can prey on another victim,” Mdhluli said.
Police have not released the identities of the escaped suspects but have assured the community that all available resources are being deployed to secure their swift recapture.
