In a case hailed as a significant victory in the fight against gender-based violence, a 28-year-old man has been sentenced to an effective 33 years’ imprisonment for a brutal two-day assault on a woman. The sentencing in the Beaufort West Regional Court on Monday, 25 November 2025, coincided with the first day of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lieutenant General (Adv) Thembisile Patekile, publicly applauded the investigation and prosecution teams for their diligence in securing the conviction.
The court heard that the ordeal began on Saturday, 17 August 2024, when the 28-year-old victim visited the accused, then a friend, at his residence on Falatsa Avenue, Sidesaviwa in Beaufort West. Over a period of two days, the man repeatedly violated the woman, holding her against her will.
The attack escalated when the assailant stabbed the victim in the head and chest with a knife. The woman eventually managed to escape her captor and reported the incident to the police.
The accused was arrested soon thereafter and remained in custody until his sentencing. The Beaufort West Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit investigated the matter.
In his final ruling, the presiding judge handed down the following sentences:
-
20 years imprisonment for rape
-
10 years imprisonment for Assault with Intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH)
-
3 years imprisonment for kidnapping
