The Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit has apprehended a 57-year-old former professional nurse for his alleged involvement in a disability grant fraud scheme that defrauded the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) of R50,000.
The arrest is the culmination of an intensive and comprehensive investigation into fraudulent SASSA disability grant applications.
According to official reports, the case originated on 11 April 2024 when a fraud case was opened at the Botlokwa SAPS. Preliminary information indicated that the accused had been assisting community members in applying for SASSA disability grants despite them neither being disabled nor meeting the qualification criteria. These fraudulent applications resulted in several individuals receiving payments from SASSA, causing a confirmed financial loss of R50,000.
The initial phase of the investigation was handled by Botlokwa Detectives, leading to the arrest of a female suspect, Agnes Mohale, on 17 April 2024. Mohale appeared before the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court and was released on warning. However, her case was subsequently withdrawn from the court roll to allow for further investigation.
The investigation was then escalated, and the docket was transferred to the Limpopo Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit. Following a thorough probe, the unit identified the primary suspect—the former Department of Health nurse—and positively linked him to the fraudulent scheme.
Evidence gathered during the investigation revealed that the suspect had allegedly completed SASSA disability application forms and, critically, had signed them on behalf of a Medical Doctor without authorisation.
