Barkly East SAPS Bust Drug Dealer Using Ambulance as Transport

In a bold strike against narcotics trafficking, the Barkly East South African Police Service (SAPS) intercepted a drug dealer exploiting an ambulance for transport, leading to a significant seizure on Monday, 17 November 2025.

The operation was launched at approximately 19:30 after police acted on a credible tip-off regarding the dealer’s activities. Officers conducted an interception on the R58 road in the direction of Khowa (Elliot). The targeted vehicle, an ambulance known for its weekly patient transfers to East London, was stopped during its return journey.

A search of all occupants and their luggage was conducted. During the search, a 35-year-old female passenger was found in possession of a substantial quantity of illegal drugs. The suspect was immediately placed under arrest.

The confiscated narcotics included 105 full Mandrax tablets and 12 sachets of Tik, with a combined estimated street value of R16,500.00.

The arrested woman made her first court appearance the following day, Tuesday, 18 November 2025, at the Barkly East Magistrate’s Court.

This incident marks the second major drug bust for the Barkly East SAPS in a matter of days. In an unrelated case on Friday, 14 November 2025, police stopped and searched three suspicious men within the town of Barkly East. That search led to the discovery and seizure of 43 Mandrax tablets and 89 grams of Tik.

The three suspects, aged 25, 28, and 33, were arrested at the scene.
