A 51-year-old Police Sergeant stationed at the Haenertsburg SAPS has been arrested by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit on charges of Theft and Defeating the Administration of Justice.
The arrest stems from an incident on 15 March 2024, when the sergeant, while on a crime prevention patrol with colleagues in the Haenertsburg area, identified a suspicious vehicle. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and sped off, leading to a chase that concluded in the Mankweng policing area. There, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
Upon inspecting the abandoned vehicle, police discovered it was loaded with chainsaws suspected to be stolen. The vehicle was subsequently driven back to the Haenertsburg SAPS, where the recovered chainsaws were officially booked into the SAPS 13 evidence register.
However, an investigation revealed that the sergeant allegedly removed two of the chainsaws from the evidence register and sold them for personal gain. The stolen chainsaws have since been recovered by authorities.
Following the opening of a formal case docket at Haenertsburg SAPS, the matter was transferred to the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for further investigation. After a thorough probe, the case was presented to a Senior State Prosecutor, who issued a warrant for the sergeant’s arrest.
The suspect was served with the warrant on 26 September 2025. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance at the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on 24 October 2025.
